PUDUCHERRY: Radiological, clinical and pathological findings need to be correlated for correct diagnosis of bone cancer, stressed Dr Nirmala Jambhekar, a renowned bone pathologist from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.Speaking at a Continued Medical Education(CME) on bone and joint pathology organised recently by the department of pathology at the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences in association with the Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry Chapter, she said that many inflammatory lesions and benign tumours are misdiagnosed as malignant if radiology and clinical presentation is not correlated.Dr C N Srinivas of MIOT Hospitals introduced clinicians to new markers for osteoporosis like ostase and NTx in men and post menopausal women. New markers like bone alkaline phosphatase known as ostase can be estimated in the serum by immunoassay. This marker is elevated when a patient has osteoporosis, aiding early diagnosis in men and post menopausal women, he said.  He said that there is a lot of vitamin deficiency amongst the Information Technology crowd and Vitamin D levels have to be estimated in people who complain of muscle pain. He added that about 900 Vitamin D deficiency tests are conducted in his centre every month. Another problem is Vitamin D toxicity, which develops if taken in quantities more than necessary, he said.Dr Siddaraju of JIPMER talked about the usefulness of needle aspiration to diagnose bone lesions. Dr Surendra Verma, president of the Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry Chapter spoke. Delegates from not only Puducherry, but also different parts of Tamil Nadu including Madurai, Tiruchy, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari participated. Post graduate students as well as delegates from Kerala and Karnataka participated in the Continued Medical Education programme as well.
