KOCHI: The Container Freight Station(CFS) set up by the Gateway Distripark (Kerala) Limited (GDKL) at Vallarpadam near the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) became operational on Tuesday. This is the first CFS to become operational at Vallarpadam. Top executives of the Cochin Port Trust, Dubai Port World and prominent figures from the shipping sector were present on the occasion of the commencement of operations. The CFS, located just opposite to the ICTT is spread across 6.5 acres. The CFS has warehouse facilities and container storage facilities. It also has a separate area for customs authorities to inspect cargo on wheels. “These facilities, coupled with the proximity to the ICTT, will help reduce the transaction cost for importers and exporters and strengthen trade. GDKL owns another 22 acres of land in Kalamassery, which will be developed in the next phase,” the company authorities said in a press release. Incorporated in 2006, the GDKL is a joint venture between the Gateway Distripark Limited and Chakiath Group with 60 and 40 per cent stakes respectively.
