BANGALORE: Representatives of private and public sectors from European Union as well as India shared a common platform to explore opportunities and exchange knowledge and experience for research and development collaboration during the third day of the EBTC Environment Business and Technology Centre here on Wednesday.During a panel discussion on EU-India pubic sector R&D opportunity, Dr Arun K Tripathi, Director of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), highlighted numerous opportunities for collaboration, including a national level research centre, solar energy centre, the centre for wind energy technology and the National Institute of Renewable Energy. He also maintained that European companies interested in collaborating with Indian partners in the field of energy are welcome. “There is great potential for collaboration and this is a good forum for these to come together.Collaborations are required especially in the energy field. Demand is exponentially growing, and power generation can’t keep pace, so the gap keeps growing and will continue to grow. Therefore, anything that contributes towards energy and power production is welcomed. MNRE has national schemes and welcomes international collaboration,” he added.Prof Udupi Shrinivasa, from Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and member of the Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board, highlighted that energy security and food security are interlinked issues.“Food production today is heavily dependent on availability of energy at every stage, including seed distribution, irrigation, fertilizers, and so on. The real issue therefore is not ‘food vs fuel, but actually fuel for food,” he observed.
