KOZHIKODE: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said that many vices were prevalent in the society today because people were deviating from the principles of Gandhism. He was speaking after unveiling a Gandhi Statue at the Malabar Christian College here on Saturday.Corruption, terrorism and communalism are the main problems that our society is facing and these stem from people who forget Gandhian values, he said. He added that Gandhian values would hold firm for ever despite the emergence of many schools of thought which derided Gandhism as outdated and impractical in the modern world.Gandhi believed that villages are the soul of India. Gramaswaraj was one of his dreams. The government is trying to fulfil that dream, he said, adding that all development in the country today is connected with villages and farmers.Chandy also presented a memento to Devassia Devagiri who sculpted the statue. The statue commemorates Gandhi’s visit to the MCC as part of his efforts to collect a Harijan Uplift Fund on January 13, 1934.
