CIA under fire for destroying torture tapes
CIA said it wiped the tapes to protect the identities of its agents.

New Delhi: US President George Bush has said he has no recollection of the existence of two videotapes of CIA interrogations that were destroyed in 2005.

The CIA admitted on Thursday that it had wiped the tapes, but claimed it did so to protect the identities of its agents.

The United States has been widely criticized by European allies and human rights groups, which say that the tapes contained incriminating records of torture techniques used on terror suspects.

The methods include "waterboarding", in which prisoners are made to feel as if they are drowning.

Democrats have accused the CIA of withholding information about the tapes from official proceedings like the 9/11 commission and even a federal court and have demanded that the matter be probed.

A US Senate Committee has promised a thorough investigation into the matter.

The New York Times reported on Saturday that White House and Justice Department officials, as well as some senior members of Congress, advised the CIA in 2003 against the plan to destroy hundreds of hours of videotapes.
