Bangalore: Alert residents prevented a suspected ‘sacrifice’ of a two-year-old boy at Chandranagar in Kumaraswamy Layout on Thursday. The ‘tantrik’, beaten up by the residents, was later handed over to the local police for further investigation of the case. This is the second case reported on the outskirts of the city in the last one month.
According to the police, the accused has been identified as Sumatheendra Nadig alias Sumatheendra Rao, 54, a resident of Chandranagar. The rescued boy is Vinay, son of Vishwantah, a driver at a call centre and Nagaratna, a homemaker. At around 10.30 am, Rajamma, Vinay’s grand-mother was holding Vinay and standing in front the of house.
The accused Nadig, who stays nearby, came and asked Rajamma to hand over the boy for sacrificing during a puja. She refused and tried to go inside the house. But he snatched the baby and ran to his house and locked himself up. Rajamma called the neighbours, who rushed to the spot, broke open the door and saved the baby while he was allegedly strangulating him with a towel. On the receipt of information, the police came to the spot and arrested him.
Nadig, said, “I used to give biscuits to children and feed the crows regularly and do puja, as it prevents bad effects. You have to sacrifice a three-year-old child to get this benefit. So I didn’t try to kill him as he was just two years old.” According to the locals, Nadig, a native of Shimoga, was staying in a rented house at Chandranagar. He was a driver in KSRTC, but had later turned to astrology. He was a drunkard, they added.
The Kumaraswamy Layout police confirmed that it as a case of attempt to human sacrifice and have taken Nadig into custody.
