Six students and an alumnus of a private engineering college in Gummudipoondi — all of them hailing from Andhra Pradesh — were arrested by the police in two cases, one for inflicting grievous injuries and the other for kidnap, here on Saturday.

It all began when Pawan and Naveen, students of the engineering college, called their immediate juniors Bharath Reddy and Ramasubbu Reddy, both from ECE department, on Wednesday night to their apartment in Shanti Colony.

According to the police, both students were beaten up by four persons - Srinivasa Teja, Naveen, Pawan and Manoj Kumar — for not paying “desired respect” to the seniors.

Teja is an alumnus of the college while the other three are final-year students. In retaliation, Bharath Reddy and Ramasubbu Reddy ganged up with Rajesh, Rahul Reddy and Arjun and paid a visit to the same apartment.

Not finding the quartet there, they kidnapped Manoj Kumar’s younger brother Bharath Kumar besides injuring Vishnu Vardan and Goushal Reddy who were also present in the apartment.

Police were soon informed about the kidnap and search operations began.

Sensing the police on their trail, Rajesh and Arjun dropped Bharath Kumar at Karanodai Bridge in Periyapalayam Road. The gang then boarded a share auto and was subsequently intercepted by Anna Nagar Inspector Surendar Kumar during a routine vehicle check around 3 am on Saturday.

Thirumangalam Assistant Commissioner B Kalitheerthan and Inspector Frank D Ruban interrogated the students.

Investigations revealed a history of animosity between the two gangs. Srinivasa Teja, Naveen, Pawan and Manoj Kumar were booked under sections 324 and 506 (ii) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Ramasubbu Reddy, Bharath Reddy and Rahul Reddy under sections 365, 448, 324 and 506((ii) of IPC.

All the accused were produced before a Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Egmore and were remanded in judicial custody.
