KOCHI: A high-level team of officials of the District Administration, which probed into the recent LPG cylinder explosions, hasfound that the damage occurred while handling the cylinders by the distributors has caused the explosion. The special team will soon submit its final report before the higher officials for further action. The team reached the conclusions after noticing that the cooking gas cylinder explosion which damaged Eloor municipal councillor Joseph Antony’s house last week was caused owing to improper handling of the cylinder. “The cylinder was carelessly handled. All other components of the cylinder were found to be proper. This comes as no surprise since the handling of cooking gas cylinders by the distributors is done in a very rough and careless manner,” highly-placed sources told Express. They added that such careless handling damages the knob of the cylinder. To avoid such incidents in the future, the team has suggested awareness classes on proper cylinder handling methods for those engaged in distribution of cylinders. “However, the consumers too should be careful while handling cylinders. Awareness needs to be raised in this regard too. Another aspect that has come to our notice is that most of the gas agencies are charging extra money from consumers for cylinders. The District Supply Officer has been asked to look into the matter immediately,” sources added. The team, led by assistant collector Swagath Bhandari Ranveerchand, comprises the District Supply Officer, Explosives Controller, Factories and Boilers Inspector, and representatives of the Indian Oil Corporation and Fire and Resuce Service Personnel. The high level meeting of officials from various departments concerned was held in the wake of recent cylinder explosions. However, officials from the IOC did not turn up at the meeting.
