A recent claim circulating on various media platforms suggesting an increase in bus fares in Tamil Nadu following electricity tariff adjustments has been debunked by the state government’s fact-finding committee. According to a report released by the committee, there has been a concerted effort by certain private television channels and social media outlets to disseminate misleading information intended to discredit the Tamil Nadu government.
The report highlights that over the past two days, these sources have been falsely reporting an impending hike in bus fares, purportedly timed to influence public opinion ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in two years.
The AIADMK’s IT wing and other opposition parties have been accused of leveraging social media to spread these baseless rumours, alleging that the government intends to implement fare increases that would conveniently fade from public memory by the end of the electoral cycle.
In response, the fact-finding committee clarified the situation, affirming that no decision has been made nor plans formulated to raise government bus fares in Tamil Nadu. They tagged and refuted the message spread by private television channels, emphasising that the speculation is entirely unfounded.
Transport Minister Sivasankar further reiterated that there have been no discussions or considerations whatsoever regarding any increase in government bus fares at this time.
