Blast marks end of ceasefire in SL, school kids dead

New Delhi: Even as the six-year ceasefire between Sri Lanka's government and the Tamil Tigers formally came to an end on Wednesday, a blast rocked Moneragala, near the the town of Badulla.

The roadside bomb attack on a civillian bus killed 23 people including several children. Sixty-seven people have been wounded and were rushed to a nearby hospital.

A hospital official said around 50 people have been admitted with injuries.

The bus was carrying large number of school children when the explosion took place around 7:40 am, police sources were quoted by news agency PTI as saying, adding the explosives were placed inside the bus.

The Sri Lankan government had give a notice two weeks ago to the LTTE that it was pulling out of the agreement which was brokered by Norway in 2002.

The government alleges that the LTTE used the ceasefire to rearm and regroup.

Of late Sri Lankan forces have launched massive operations against LTTE cadre. Even LTTE chief Vellupillai Prabhakaran is reported to have been injured in one such raid.
