Shahdol: Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) senior leader Gyan Singh helped his party retaining the Shahdol Lok Sabha parliamentary seat by winning the by-poll by over 57,000 votes on Tuesday.

BJP has already won Nepanagar assembly by-poll as Manju Dadu defeated Congress nominee Antar Singh Barde by over 42,000 votes.

SC/ST Welfare minister Singh, a BJP veteran and legislator from Umaria assembly constituency, managed to play down demonetisation cries in the state successfully.

Singh won by 57,632 votes garnering 3,82,381 votes while his opponent Himadri came close with 3,26,006 votes.

Congress which had stumped BJP by fielding 29-year-old Himadri, a young and suave tribal face who inherits political legacy of his late father the ex-union minister Dalbeer Singh only felt bolstered after public anger was witnessed following demonetisation hassles in this tribal dominated district.

However people surprised many by reposing faith in Narendra Modi led government at the Centre.

After Madhya Pradesh came into existence on Nov 1, 1956, the Lok Sabha constituency has witnessed polls 15 times since 1957 with BJP winning five times and Congress emerging victorious on half a dozen occasions.

The by-poll was necessitated in the parliamentary constituency region with the demise of Member of Parliament Dalpat Singh.
