KENDRAPARA: The forest and veterinary officials have sounded high alert on Monday in Bhitarkanika national park after bird flu cases were reported in some parts of the State. The officials have also taken precautionary measures to detect sick birds, if any, in the park and its nearby areas, said Debabrta Banerjee, Chief District Medical Officer (CDVO) of Kendrapara, on Monday. Adequate measures had also been taken at the heronry, where lakhs of migratory avian species arrive every winter. As an awareness measure on flu, forest and veterinary officials distributed leaflets and booklets among the people near the park, said the officer. A Rapid Response Team (RRT) was also constituted in all the nine blocks of the district. A veterinary assistant surgeon (VAS), two livestock inspectors, one Go-mitra, zilla parishad members and social workers are the members of each RRT. “Nearly 20,000 poultry, including chicks, have been vaccinated in the district within a month. We received 10,000 vials for the purpose in the district, said Banerjee. Migratory birds like bar-headed geese, bramihi duck, great black-headed gull, Shovellers and cormorant are being monitored as it is being believed that the deadly H5N1 strain is being spread mainly by these species, said the veterinary officer.
