The BJP-JJP alliance government in Haryana got a major breather on Wednesday when the no-confidence motion brought against it by the opposition Congress was defeated staving off pressure from the farmers’ unions who had ‘appealed to MLAs’ for defeating the Khattar government during the floor test.
In the House of 90, with the current strength of 88, the BJP got 55 votes against Congress’ 32.
The farmer’s union leaders including Rakesh Tikait had issued an appeal on the eve of the trust vote asking MLAs from the ruling alliance to listen to their `conscience’ and support the no-trust vote.
While speaking against the motion, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in his reply quipped that the Congress had turned into a `habitual no-confidence’ party adding that it had a culture of mistrust. “Be it the vaccine or the surgical strikes, the Congress has this habit of not trusting,’’ he said.
The Chief Minister said that despite knowing that we have the numbers, the Opposition had brought in the motion only to encash politically on the farmers stir. “They have done nothing for the sake of farmers. But by bringing in this motion they want to mislead the farmers,’’ he said.
He listed the several schemes that had been initiated by the Haryana government and had protected vociferously the MSP structure. He even quoted Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu who he claimed had praised the Haryana model in the Punjab Assembly recently.
Earlier moving the motion, the Leader of the Opposition, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, commented that the Chief Minister was `was behaving like Nero when Rome was burning’, adding that the same situation had arisen in Haryana.
He alleged that the sentiments against the Khattar government were so strong that the CM could not go to Panipat to unfurl Tricolour on Republic Day and instead went to neighbouring Panchkula to escape farmers’ anger.
Hooda also demanded the inclusion of nearly 250 farmers killed in farmers’ agitation in the obituary references of the Haryana Assembly. However, Hooda’s demand for a secret vote was rejected by the Speaker.
Alliance partner Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) and Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala in his reply attacked former CM Hooda for extending undue favours to the big corporates at the cost of farmers. He alleged that farmers were forced to sell their land to the corporates at cheap rates under the threat of land acquisition during Hooda’s 10-year old regime.
But a JJP MLA Devender Singh Babli expressed concern over the continuing agitation and even claimed that the farm laws were not conducive for the farmers and there should be a rethink.
