Mumbai: A long queue of interviewee is not a scene that one can associate with the world's richest cricket body, which is now known more for its mis-management.
It seems times have changed at BCCI, and in keeping with the times the cricket board, too, has turned more professional. The cricket body started a recruitment process last weekend and interviewed some 30 candidates for 23 posts that includes general mangers, media managers to liaison and travel officers for the Indian team.
These jobs were earlier left for the various members of the board in honorary capacity. The interview panel consisted of IS Bindra, Lalit Modi, Niranjan Shah, Ratnakar Shetty and MP Pandove.
The candidates were earlier short-listed by the Tata Consultancy Services, which had been hired by the board to help it become more professional.
On the basis of the report filed by the TCS to BCCI, the board will now be based on the ICC module with the exception of the CEO and the three general managers will be reporting to the board secretary and treasurer.
The BCCI hierarchy now looks something like this. On top of the pyramid of power sits the President Sharad Pawar. Flanking him are the Honorary Treasurer Srinivasan and Secretary Niranjan Shah.
The next in the chain of command is the general manager level - finance and admin are being shouldered with the cricket management board. Each of the managerial bodies is selectively aided by the various assistant GMs and managers.
The lowest rung in the food chain are the media, communications and HR management levels.
In short, the board structure will remain the same. What changes is that there will be professional men coming into the picture for the job earlier done by honorary members. This is likely to ensure smooth operations in these levels.
Due to a lot of pressure from the ICC, the Indian cricket board has been forced to turn professional. However, how much power these AGMs and GMs will enjoy remains to be seen.
