CHENNAI: Film actors and former civil servants have asked those backing the need for a Jan Lokpal Bill to hang a white flag outside their home, even as they called on the people of Tamil Nadu to be more proactive in their support to the anti-corruption legislation. These views were expressed at a meeting, organised by We the People of India, by former chief election commissioner T S Krishnamurthy, eminent civil servant B S Raghavan, popular Tamil speaker Suki Sivam, and actors Shivakumar and Swarnamalya.“There is a view that there isn’t enough movement on the ground. This is possibly because there is a certain abstraction involved in fighting for a piece of legislation. I think we all need to do more to take the message of the demonstrations to the people,” said Sivam. He observed that the Government should understand that Anna Hazare was not an individual, but the voice of the people. “This is not the time for arguments over laws. This is the time for justice. This is not the time to discuss who has the authority to do what,” he added.Krishnamurthy, often praised for his professional integrity, on the other hand, said the passage of a Lokpal Bill through Parliament alone would not be enough. “The need for the Lokpal Bill is urgent. But, we must also move quickly to implement electoral and police reforms. Only then can we have better governance,” he insisted.
