PARADIP: As per Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s directive, the district administration has asked all tehsildars of Jagatsinghpur to furnish details of family members of those who died during the 1999 super cyclone by August 25. No claims would be entertained after that, officials said. Sources said even after 12 years of the tragedy that claimed thousands of lives, several victims are yet to get the ` 50,000 from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund as compensation.Immediately after the natural calamity, the district received ` 27 crore as ex gratia from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for 5,400 kin of the deceased, but an additional ` 7.30 crore is required for payment to more bereaved families. Naveen Patnaik reviewed details of the Chief Minister’s relief fund in June and found that Jagatsinghpur administration was still submitting ex gratia claims of people whose family members died in the super cyclone. The Chief Minister then directed the District Collector to finalise a date and complete submission of all pending  claims by then.  Official sources said the administration had received 6,985 ex gratia claims but compensation was paid to 5,400 applicants. With each passing day, the number of applications have been increasing. Deputy Collector (emergency) Sarojakant Mohanty said the administration had directed all tehsildars to complete the exercise and furnish the list of people for compensation.
