La Quinta: Indian golfer Arjun Atwal shot a creditable two-under 70 in the opening round but still found himself way down the leaderboard at tied 80th in the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation.
Atwal, who missed the cut at the opening event in Sony Open last week, had an eventful round with three birdies, an eagle and three bogeys. But with the scores going really low, he was stranded way behind.
Atwal started from the 10th and bogeyed the 13th and 14th before finding his first birdie on 17th. He bogeyed the first, at which point he was two-over.
Then he birdied the fourth, eagled the fifth and had another birdie on seventh to go two-under for the day. At the top, David Toms and Camillo Villegas shot identical nine-under 63 to share the lead on a day of impressive scores.
Both played bogey-free rounds in the tournament that used to be called Bob Hope Classic till last year. It has also dropped one day from its old five-day format.
Ted Potter Jr., Sang-moon Bae, Brandt Snedeker and Bob Estes were a shot adrift in perfect weather conditions.
