CUTTACK: The death of Sk Indat Ali (21) during the constable recruitment drive in Bhubaneswar on Thursday sparked outrage in his village __ Kuranga Pradhan __ under Sadar Police limits on Friday. Villagers staged a blockade on the busy Phulnakhara-Niali road, disrupting vehicular traffic for more than three hours, demanding proper compensation for his family. The villagers felled trees and burnt tyres on the road as they demanded Rs. 10 lakh to the kin of Ali, a job to his younger brother and action against the police officers conducting the test at the time. They alleged that delay in providing him medical attention caused the death. Ali was appearing for a running test when he collapsed on the track. He was rushed to the Capital Hospital where he was declared received-dead. His family members and villagers alleged that had he been taken to the Kalinga Hospital, located near-by, his life could have been saved. The officers present also did not attempt to provide immediate treatment to him, they charged. Ali’s body was brought to Kuranga Pradhan late on Thursday night. However, the villagers took to the streets before he was laid to rest. Senior police officers rushed to the spot and persuaded the locals to withdraw the agitation by assuring them of action. The blockade was lifted and the burial conducted in the afternoon. Ali hailed from a family of policemen with two of his brothers being in service. He had been attempting to get into police service since 2008. He is believed to have been suffering from some health problems which led to his collapse under the stress of running. The postmortem report is awaited.
