Jerusalem: Israeli Prime minister Ariel Sharon continues to be in a critical condition.

After an emergency operation was conducted on the Israeli PM who had suffered a stroke, Dr Shlomo Mor-Yosef, Director of Jerusalem's Hadassah hospital said the Israeli PM was clinging to life on a respirator.

Doctors say there are still chances that Sharon could recover as scans after the last operation show marginal improvement.

"During the surgery, cranial pressure was relieved from the brain and there is no active bleeding at the moment," says he.

Sharon suffered a severe cerebral haemorrhage on Wednesday and is now under heavy sedation at Jerusalem's Hadassah hospital.

Surgeons said they stemmed bleeding in the 77-year-old leader's brain in a seven-hour operation and described his condition as critical.

Sharon experienced massive bleeding in his brain after the stroke. Dr Shlomo Mor-Yosef said the prime minister would remain in deep sedation and on a respirator to "recover from severe trauma".

The induced coma is intended to ease the pressure in Sharon's skull. And after a period of sedation, doctors hope to gradually waken the prime minister, said Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef.

"This is a lengthy process. It won't be in the coming hours. It will be at least 48 hours after the prime minister's emergence from surgery," Mor-Yosef said.
