A murder accused was hacked to death by a gang in broad daylight here on Tuesday morning. George Brito (32), a resident of Jeeva Nagar, was waylaid by a gang near Ilango Nagar and murdered.
Superintendent of Police (North) S Ramaraj said George was an accused in the murder of a rowdy, K Kaarthick, in 2008. He was jailed a few weeks ago under the Arms Act but had been released on conditional bail a few days ago. He had been working as load-man in the nearby areas.
On Tuesday, George was returning on a two-wheeler after signing the register at the court around 10 am when the gang, which arrived on motorcycles, blocked his way. They overpowered him and stabbed him with sharp weapons multiple times. His palm was chopped off and his neck, hands and stomach received deep cut injuries.
Police suspected that the brutal act might have been in retaliation to the murder in 2008 and Kaarthick’s relatives might have been involved in the murder. According to sources, one person had been been detained for interrogation.
North SP Ramaraj visited the spot. Police personnel were posted in Jeeva Nagar following the gruesome incident. Of late, revenge killings and retaliatory strikes by anti-social elements, most of them youngsters in their early twenties and thirties, have become quite common in Puducherry.
It may be recalled that a notorious rowdy, Jegan, was murdered by a rival gang few months ago in broad daylight when he was being escorted back to Karaikal by the police after they produced him before a court.
The youth also indulge in extortion threatening the businessmen. To contain rowdy menace, police had prepared a list of rowdies to be booked under the Goonda’s Act but the government was yet to give a nod for it.
