Wijk Aan Zee: Viswanathan Anand suffered a shock defeat at the hands of lowly ranked US Grandmaster Gata Kamsky in his sixth round game but despite the upset, the Indian Grandmaster remains in the lead with top seed Bulgarian Veselin Topalov who drew with Dutch Sergei Tiviakov.
Anand, seeded second, tasted his first defeat on Friday as he fell victim to his own doings in his game against Kamsky.
Anand played with black against the American, who returned to big chess after a long gap. The game headed towards Queens Gambit Accepted with both the players exchanging their Queens early on.
However, it was not to be Anand's day and the American did not give any opportunity to his opponent for any counter play and outmaneouvered him in 47 moves.
In the GM group B, Koneru Humpy was beaten by Dutch Grandmaster Erwin L'Ami.
Playing with white against L'Ami in King's Indian Defense lines, Humpy gave a good fight before accepting defeat.
She is now on joint eighth spot with Georgian Baadur Jobava. Norway's Magnus Carlsen leads the GM group B with 5 points.
In the other games, British Michael Adams gained an opening advantage against Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk and unhurriedly converted it into the full point by subtle maneouvers.
The remaining games ended in draws.
