CHENNAI: The who’s who of the city turned up for the 81st birthday celebrations of noted philanthropist and pro-chancellor of Annamalai University, Dr MAM Ramaswamy, here on Sunday.All through the day, the sprawling Chettinad House near Adyar river was teeming with hundreds of men and women. A huge pandal was put up for the invitees and the ‘Sathabishekam’ was held in a grand yet traditional manner befitting the Chettinad lineage.Over a 100 priests conducted special prayers in which hymns from the Thevaram, Thiruvasagam and the Vedas were recited. There were a dozen spacious dining halls in which the choicest of delicacies were served.Dressed in Chettinad attire — with a turban and a rudraksha mala — Ramaswamy blessed the invitees and honoured them. Finance Minister O Panneerselvam, Agriculture Minister K A Sengottaiyan, MP M Thambi Durai, CPI(M) State secretary G Ramakrishnan, DMDK presidium chairman Panruti Ramachandran, Home Minister P Chidambaram, TN Congress chief K V Thangkabalu, and industrialists A C Muthiah and Venu Srinivasan attended the event.
