MADURAI: District Collector U Sagayam has slapped summons on Union Minister M K Alagiri, his wife Kanthi and son Dhayanidhi — all trustees of the M K Alagiri Educational Trust – following a complaint that field bothies (irrigation channels) were destroyed while building the Dhaya Engineering College at Sivarakottai near here.Sagayam has asked them to appear before him with relevant records on January 4 at 11 am, either in person or through a representative. The summons were issued following a complaint filed by M Ramalingam, president, Madurai District Farmers Welfare Association and a resident of Sivarakottai village. The complainant alleged that in the process of constructing the college building, the management damaged and destroyed the irrigation channels running through the fields. “The District Revenue Officer has visited the said cultivable lands and the tank (i.e) the place of occurrence to verify the veracity to the complaint of the petitioner and observed that there is prima facie case,” the notice said.An earlier notice issued on this matter was subsequently withdrawn after the Trust filed a writ petition challenging it in the High Court. The court allowed the district administration to withdraw the summons, after making an observation that a bare reading of the summons showed that the collector had virtually held the trustees guilty even before hearing the explanation to be offered by them. However it gave liberty to the collector to issue notice afresh.
