Cargo movement was hit at the airport after Airports Authority of India (AAI) chose not to renew passes of vehicles to enter the air cargo complex premises on Wednesday. The mo-ve comes after airlines refused to pay an increased licence fee levied by the airport for ground handling operations.
AAI threatened that they will not renew passes of airline vehicles, which expired on July 31 if the money is not paid. Tha-nkfully, passenger operations were not affected because Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) renewed passes of employees who handle ground operations, like check-in, for airlines, till August 7. So cargo could not be loaded into planes because Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) refused to allow vehicles without valid passes. The Supreme Court ordered a statusquo when the move to increase royalty was challenged by Federation of Indian Airlines a few months ago. Airline-AAI tussle has cropped up again after AAI hiked the fee.FIA has issued a legal notice on Wednesday to AAI chairman stating that they have raised the fee in spite of a SC order. It remains to be seen what happens over the weekend.
