New Delhi: Mahendra Sandhu, a name that has become as popular as 'Agent Vinod' after the promos of the film got released but do we really know who Sandhu was? He seems to be a very interesting personality otherwise the director of 'Agent Vinod', Sriram Raghavan wouldn't have tried to remake a flop film. Directed by Deepak Bahry in 1977, the first edition of 'Agent Vinod' was an attempted thriller involving the kidnapping of a high profile scientist.
Sandhu is probably the only actor whose real name is used in three different films but every time there was a twist. His name was Mohinder, Mahinder and Mahendra in 'Mitter Pyare Nu Haal Mureedan Da Kehna', 'Meharbaani' and 'Guru Ho Jaa Shuru' respectively.
Sandhu started his career in 1973 with 'Khoon Khoon' and went on to make 17 films in next 19 years. And then he did what most of the actors want to do after a point of time in their careers. He became a director in 'Kisme Kitna Hai Dum' in 1992. However Sandhu's storyteller phase started and ended with this film only.
He may look like Feroz Khan at certain angles but his mannerism is closer to Dharmendra. Sandhu's sense of camera angles can easily remind you of roadside Romeos of Punjab.
There is something about his eyes which says that the man is more of a romantic lover than a ruthless agent. Watch 'Loveleena' song of 'Agent Vinod' (1978) if you don't believe me.
Sandhu had a bit of Shammi Kapoor too, rather he was an improvised version of Tariq, sorry if you don't find any link between Shammi Kapoor and Tariq, but just try to imagine Shammi Kapoor doing rock n roll in white suit and Tariq singing 'Chaand mera dil' on a stage lit with red lights, now mix their traits and you'll find a Mahendra Sandhu.
Sandhu definitely had a raw appeal which prompted the directors to cast him as daring and brutal secret agent. Saif's resemblance with Sandhu will be questioned only after the release of the film but till then Mahendra Sandhu will remain the quintessential Indian secret agent who thrived more on looks than his skills.
