PUDUCHERRY: Out of the 106 persons affected by gastroenteritis over the last four days, nine were found to be suffering from cholera.  Briefing newsmen at a press conference Director of Health and Family Welfare Dr K V Raman, on Tuesday, said the patients were from Mudaliarpet,  Boomianpet, the two areas affected by water contamination,  and three  patients from Gorimedu.   In the last three days 91 cases  were admitted to the Indira Gandhi GGH  and 15 cases to JIPMER with diarrhoea and vomiting. The people in the affected areas were  being treated, at special camps, with oral dehydration packets, antibiotics.A surveillance team  comprising members of the department of preventive and social medicine, JIPMER and Public Health wing of the Health department have taken up the task of visiting the areas for eliminating the source. Further, PWD authorities have been contacted to flush out the water from the pipes in the affected areas and  arrest leakages to clear out the source of infection. Broken or rusted pipes are being replaced.Chlorination of water tanks has been taken up. He also advised schools to chlorinate their water tanks every alternate day. The pediatric ward in IGGH&PGI was vacated  and these cases have been exclusively accommodated there. Also a ward has been opened in IGGGH&PGI, Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute  to receive the extra patients.  He advised people only to consume water boiled at least for 20 minutes and then cooled. In case of excessive diarrhoea, vomiting, people could seek attention from the nearest PHC, CHC, call the helpline on 0413-2336971, casualty helpline at 0413-2336050 or call the 108 ambulance service, he said.
