A rare honour for Keralite in London

Receiving a letter of appreciation from the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is not something that happens everyday. That too for a Keralite.

London 2012 volunteer Seema Menon, residing at Kenton in London, was pleasantly surprised earlier this month when a letter signed by David Cameron stated that the Olympics “could not have been possible without you”.

A dance enthusiast, the Thrissur native had performed as a drummer in the ‘Pandemonium’ segment of the London 2012 opening ceremony directed by Oscar-winner Danny Boyle. Later, she doubled up as a marshal, ushering in athletes during the opening and closing ceremonies. “It is a remarkable gesture that keeps me motivated as a volunteer and a performer,” Seema told Express from London.

“When I embarked upon this opportunity, I did it for the sheer novelty and splendour of the event as it is a once-in-a-life time chance. I didn’t have the faintest clue about such a letter that would be sent by the Prime Minister.”

The letter from 10 Downing Street states: “As a ceremonies volunteer, you have made London 2012 stand out as much more than a sporting event, showing the best of British talent and creativity to the world. You and your fellow volunteers have been an essential ingredient in a remarkable summer that millions of people across the country have shared and will remember for a lifetime.

You have sent an incredible message about the warmth, friendliness and can-do spirit of the United Kingdom right around the world. Quite simply, the Games couldn’t have been possible without you.”
