Bengaluru: It is nothing short of an Indrani Mukherjea saga. A software professional kills his wife, convinces the world that it is a suicide, then plans to eliminate his paramour’s husband to get her back. Gokul MG who made that million dollar hoax bomb threat call to Bengaluru and Delhi airports on Saturday looks like a criminal with a twisted mind. A Keralite, Gokul shifted to Bengaluru looking for better job opportunities and to get his old sweet heart back.
To understand his mind and reconstruct the events IBNLIVE spoke to a few police officers who are questioning him. According to them he was obsessed with his old girlfriend who is currently married to a man called Jose. He wanted to win her back at any cost.
In 2008, during his days in Delhi, he met Anuradha, a Bengali girl from Jharkhand and married her in 2009. Life was smooth for both sometime. In 2011, Gokul tracked his old girlfriend through Facebook and re-established contacts with her. She was already going through a bad marriage and responded to him positively. Gokul moved to Bengaluru with his wife and even found a flat in the same apartment where she was staying. His wife Anuradha was not aware of anything. After moving to Bengaluru, things started going wrong for them. Anuradha was working as a lecturer and started having an affair with one of her students. Gokul was aware of it. Initially he thought of divorcing her on the basis of her illicit relationship. Knowing that Anuradha was very superstitious, he created a fake account in the name of a ‘god man’ called Baba and sent her a message saying that he is aware of her affair. A shocked Anuradha replied to that mail. He later asked her to send him a picture of her and her boyfriend taking shower together saying that he will do some special pooja to strengthen their relationship. She immediately sent him a nude picture of both of them together. Gokul initially wanted to use that to get a divorce. But the problem was their three years old daughter. He did not want to lose her custody. He later hatched a plot to eliminate her to keep their daughter with him.
On July 28, he made her drink a lot of alcohol and allegedly killed her. He convinced her parents that she had killed herself and showed them her nude pictures with her boyfriend. They believed his version and kept quiet. The police registered a case of unnatural death.
After that he started plotting the elimination of Jose. He initially thought of murdering him said one of the police officers who spoke to IBNLIVE. However, he dropped that idea and started making plans to frame him in a terror case.
Before that he had sent a mail from a fake email account created in the name of Jose and his wife to a powerful Christian Arch Bishop in Kochi saying that they wanted divorce. When they were summoned by the Arch Bishop to Kochi to discuss the matter, both of them told him that they did not send him that mail. But, it strained their relationship further.
After that failed, he created a fake Facebook account in Jose’s name claiming that he is an Islamic State (IS) supporter. He had even planted some skull caps in his wardrobe thinking that the police would raide Jose’s flat. But, it did not click.
Later he came up with his million dollar hoax bomb call plan, which finally exposed him completely. When the Police confronted him on Sunday evening, initially he told them that he was innocent. When the Police showed him the proofs they had, he broke down and confessed to his crime. He even told the Police that he had murdered his wife. The Police even questioned Anuradha’s boyfriend about their affair.
According to a report in city tabloid ‘Bangalore Mirror’ to his childhood sweetheart, he's something of a hero. "Gokul has taken so much risk for me so I don't want to cheat him and I will look after his daughter along with both my children," Karuna (name changed) told police when they held a counselling session with her.
With her father arrested and her mother dead, the only child of Gokul MG and Anuradha is now staying with Karuna's family till the couple's family members come and take a decision.
Gokul was arrested on Sunday night after being detained in the early hours of Saturday from his apartment at Sector 6 in HSR Layout for sending WhatsApp messages to officials at Bengaluru and Delhi airports, threatening to blow up six international flights.
After the love angle came to the fore, police got suspicious about Karuna's role in the conspiracy and started questioning her. Three women officers, including a counsellor, spoke to her in a series of sessions lasting several hours. However, it appears she had no role in either the murder of Anuradha or in the bomb threats.
"She opened up easily and was forthcoming with information. It was quite apparent in the manner she spoke about Gokul that she has a soft corner for him," said a senior police officer, who is part of the investigations. It has also emerged that she was close to Gokul during her college days, but due to caste issues, her family married her off to Jose. However, she has told investigators she had sought divorce within a year of the marriage. The police officer said Jose was keen to ensure things worked out. He convinced her not to separate. Subsequently, they had two kids, though things were not all rosy. Karuna has reportedly told police there were frequent flare-ups with her husband. After Gokul made a comeback into her life in 2011, she started feeling more drawn toward him. "Once they got closer, Gokul started planning to eliminate all those who posed a hurdle in their relationship," the police officer said says ‘Bangalore Mirror’.
A senior police officer who spoke to IBNLIVE said that it was a very rare case. He said “Gokul is a diabolical character. A criminal with a twisted mind. Otherwise, one can’t kill his own wife like this and plot a hoax bomb call. He could easily have divorced his wife and could even have convinced his paramour to leave her husband. There was no need of killing his wife and making a million dollar bomb threat call. In my opinion he deserves death sentence."
This crime of passion has claimed the life of a young woman, her toddler daughter has lost her mother, father who killed her has gone to jail and may not return from there. Anuradha’s parents have lost their daughter to a criminal husband, Jose’s middle class family life has come out in the open causing him tremendous agony for no fault of his.
Bengaluru City Police records prove that well paid professionals getting into crime, murdering their own husband and wife have become common these days. Several dozen such incidents have taken place in the past 10-15 years. Extramarital affairs, illicit relationships etc are also on the rise, some ending in a disaster like this.
Sadly, the economic boom and new opportunities are destroying family life of young professionals instead of strengthening them.
