Nine people were killed and three others were critically injured when their jeep collided with a speeding truck on Raipur-Jagdalpur national highway in Kanker district in Chhattisgarh on Sunday, police said.
The incident took place at around 8:30 pm under Charama police station limits, Kanker Superintendent of Police Rajendra Dash told PTI over phone.
The Commander jeep, carrying 15 people, was going towards Kanker from Dhamtari while the speeding truck was coming from Jagdalpur towards Raipur when the incident took place near Charama.
The intensity of the collision was so severe that nine people, including a few women, died on the spot, he said.
The injured, including a baby and the driver, have been admitted to the government hospital in Charama, while those in serious condition are being shifted to Dhamtari, the SP said.
The deceased are yet to be identified, Dash said, adding that the truck driver fled from the spot after the accident and efforts are on to nab the truck driver.
In a separate incident, two persons, including a woman, died on the spot and four others were injured as a mini goods transport vehicle they were travelling was knocked down by a passanger train at an unmanned railway crossing in Chhattisgarh's Balod district on Sunday, police said.
The mishap occurred at Pararas about a kilometre away from the Balod railway station on Dillirajhara-Durg rail route at the unmanned railway crossing, Balod Superintendent of Police Ramgopal Garg told PTI.
According to the officer, the ill-fated vehicle was loaded with vegetables and carrying three women and as many men who were heading towards Balod for selling the vegetables. In a bid to cross the unmanned railway crossing, it rammed into Dallirajhra-Durg passanger train.
Entangled with the train, the ill-fated vehicle was dragged up to one kilometer, he said. The driver of the vehicle and a woman died on the spot, while four others suffered serious injuries in the accident, he said.
The injured were rushed to Balod district hospital, where after first aid, one of them has been referred to Durg district hospital, he said.
On getting information, a team of Railway officers reached the site and track clearance work was underway, he said.
