Kathmandu: Six people, including five Indians, were killed when a speeding car driven by an apparently drunk Nepali youth hit them here early on Wednesday morning, prompting angry residents to block roads demanding stern action against the culprits.
Another Indian, who was injured, while walking on the pavement of a road was admitted to a local hospital. Police suspect that the 20-year-old man who was at the wheels and his friends were returning from a casino.
Enraged over deaths in the hit-and-run case, thousands of people forced shops to down shutters in the main markets of the capital city, demanding stern action against the culprits.
The protesters also smashed window panes of buses in the capital, which disrupted normal life.
Though police seized the car, the culprits managed to get away. However, police detained the father and brother of the youth.
The accident happened when the seven persons, inlcuding a Nepali, returning from a hospital were run over by a car at around 0045 hrs, a police official said.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Bhim Rawal visited the families of the victims and assured that the government would take action against those responsible for the mishap.
Police said the Indians, all from Bihar currently staying in the Nepalese capital, were returning from Bir Hospital after getting done a medical check-up of a 15-year-old boy.
Six of them, including the boy, died while on their way to the hospital. One Dipak Gupta from Sitamarhi who was seriously injured has been shifted to the National Institute of Neurological and Allied Sciences at Bansbari for further treatment.
The dead included two women and a 14-year-old boy.
While five of those killed have been identified, the details of one are yet to be known.
The dead include Dharmanath Sinha, 50, Krishna Devi, 40, Madan Gupta, 29, Sanjiv Gupta, 15, who were all from Sitamarhi in Bihar and Bina Singh, 46 from Motihari. An 18-year-old unidentified person was also killed in the accident.
