Our heart plays a crucial role in the functioning of the human body. In a recent development, a man underwent a heart transplant in a hospital in Tamil Nadu after experiencing multiple heart attacks. The heart surgery mentioned in this article was performed at Coimbatore’s Komai Medical Centre Hospital. Dr Prashanth Vadiyanath, Director and Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery conducted the surgery. He successfully made both hearts beat in sync. His achievement not only saved the patient’s life but also brought immense joy to the patient and the family.
Speaking about the surgery, Dr Prashanth Vadiyanath said, “I am the Director and Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at KMCH Hospital. A 48-year-old patient who had been suffering from heart and lung problems for more than a year came to our hospital for treatment. The patient had suffered multiple heart attacks and had stents placed. Due to the decreased functionality of his heart, he was unable even to perform daily tasks. So, he applied for heart and lung transplants. In this situation, we got the news that a heart is available for transplant through our organ donation network.”
“We first conducted all the tests that need to be done before transplant. Then we decided to perform a heterotopic transplant. After three hours of surgery, we successfully connected both the hearts and made them beat in sync with the help of an external device,” he added.
The doctor mentioned that the patient is presently stable and is under medical supervision. As per reports, another similar surgery was conducted in the same hospital in 2017. Dr Prashanth further added that the expense of the surgery was covered under the Chief Minister’s Health Insurance Scheme.
