HYDERABAD: The number of Aadhaar registration centres in the city will come down from 151 at present to 100 by June 15, Aadhaar project in-charge and assistant supply officer MS Seshagiri Rao said on Sunday. He added that since around sixty percent of the population had already registered their names for the Unique Identification number, there will be less need for so many registration centres in the city. “Thirty per cent of Hyderabad has already got the Aadhaar number,” said Seshagiri Rao.The Aadhaar card gives a 12-digit unique number for all citizens in the country.A project of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the card will be linked to basic demographic and biometric information including photograph of an individual which will be stored in a centralised database. This card will become the unique document for verifying all details of an individual when they apply for any government service or benefit. There are about 151 Aadhaar centres having registration kits like biometric devices, laptops and camera. Officials are going to reduce the number from 151 to 100 in the first stage and then to 50 in July. “After a couple of months, all Aadhaar centres will be wound up. People who are still not unregistered by then will have to go to the chief rationing office for registration,” Seshagiri Rao informed.
