12 killed in UP clashes over land
A clash between two families over a piece of land turned ugly as 11 people were killed and several injured in Sitapur.

Lucknow: A clash between two families over a disputed piece of land turned ugly on Friday as 12 people were killed and three others injured in Sitapur.

Unofficial reports, however, put the death toll at 15.

Director General of police Subhash Chandra said that the situation was now well under control.

Two Brahmin families are invloved in the dispute that occurred at Sharpur Jhunsi village under Thangaon police station of Sitapur in Lucknow, police say.

Both sides used firearms which resulted in the deaths. Police officials have rushed to the scene.

The incident occurred at 0700 hrs when a group attacked the members of one of the families and opened fire. A clash ensued between the two groups.

The situation in the area is tense but under control, police added.

The incident occured last night in Shankarpur Jhisni village when one family was allegedly attacked by the other killing mother, wife and three children, police said.

In retaliation, Mishra's supporters attacked Bajpai's house and killed seven persons including his mother, daughter-in-law and five other relatives.

Old enmity is stated to be the reason behind the deaths.
