CHENNAI: To drive home the message of energy conservation and climate change, Exnora has been conducting ‘lights-out’ campaign year after year. This year, the 5-11 lights out campaign will be held on Nov 11 across the city, according to Exnora volunteers. Eleven child sailors set out on a sailing journey from the Chennai Port to the Marina Beach on Sunday. The event also flagged off the campaign to create an awareness among the city’s public. The campaign was sponsored by the Tamil Nadu Sailors Association and was flagged off by Mahadevan, Naval officer for Tamil Nadu and Pudducherry.“The lights out campaign is to create an awareness on how conservation of energy, however small it may be, will go a long way in the fight against climate change and in ensuring energy security,” said MB Nirmal, founder of Exnora International. The lights out campaign was initiated in 2008 by Exnora as a part of their awareness creation drive on climate change. Various government and private institutions have lent their support to the campaign over the years. Former Mayor M Subraminan volunteered to switch off lights in the Ripon building in 2009. Former Deputy Chief Minister MK Stalin launched a similar campaign in 2010 in Anna University.
