How to Fix Hulu Subtitles & Captions
Switch off your captions and turn them on again. Pull open the “Subtitles” menu in your video player and toggle it to “Off.” Then, toggle your subtitles back on in your selected language. Continue playing the video and see if that helps resync your captions.
Reboot Hulu completely. Close out the window you’re using to watch Hulu, or close down the Hulu app altogether if that’s what you’re using. Then, open up Hulu again and see if the subtitles are working properly with your video. Tip: Try to close out any other programs you’re running on your device in addition to Hulu.
See if other programs have the same subtitle issues. Switch to a completely different movie or TV episode, making sure that subtitles are toggled on. Do they seem synced to the video, or are they still out of whack? If the subtitles are in sync: Report the issue to Hulu directly via Hulu’s Contact Us page. If Hulu’s customer service team is currently helping a large volume of customers, you might not see the option to chat with a live person right away. If the subtitles are still out of sync: Keep troubleshooting your device using the methods suggested below.
Optimize your internet connection. Hulu suggests performing a speed test on your device—typically, a 3.0 Mbps download speed is the minimum requirement for most Hulu streams. If you aren’t quite meeting that threshold, try: Disconnecting any other devices from your modem/router Closing down any extra programs on your device besides Hulu Sitting physically closer to your router/modem Connecting the ethernet cable directly to your device
Reboot your device and modem/router. Turn off the device you’re using to watch Hulu, and then turn it back on again and see if that improves your subtitle problems. It may also help to restart your router or modem to fix your internet connection, in case that’s the source of your problems.
Check that the Hulu app is up-to-date. If you’re watching Hulu via an app, head to the app store and see if there are any updates you need to download.
Clear Hulu’s cache and data on your device. According to Hulu, corruption issues within the cached files for Hulu could create issues with the platform (like subtitle problems). Here’s a quick look at how to clear Hulu’s cache and data on different devices: Android: Head to your Settings app and tap “Apps,” followed by “Hulu” and “Storage.” Then, check off “Clear Cache” and “Clear Data.” Android TV: Go to the Settings page, followed by “Applications” and “Hulu.” Then, check off “Clear Cache” and “Clear Data.” Computer browser: Clear your browser’s cache if you watch Hulu on your computer. Fire TV and Fire TV Stick: Go to your Settings page, followed by “Applications,” “Manage Installed Applications,” and “Hulu.” Then, check off both “Clear Cache” and “Clear Data.” iPhone and iPad: Go to your Settings app, followed by “General,” “iPhone Storage,” and “Hulu.” From there, take a closer look at how much space the app is taking up on your device and use the “Offload App” feature as needed. Nintendo Switch: Head to your System Settings, followed by “Data Management,” “Manage Save Data,” “Delete Sava Data,” and “Hulu.” PS4: Visit your Settings page, followed by “Storage,” “System Storage,” “Saved Data,” “Hulu,” “Options,” and “Delete.” Xbox One: Head to the “My Games and Apps” page, followed by “Apps, “Hulu,” the “☰” button, “More options,” and “Manage App.” From there, you can clear your Hulu data.
Uninstall Hulu and reinstall it again. If you’re accessing Hulu via an app, uninstall the app completely from your device before reinstalling it one more time. Then, test out a video and see if the subtitles are working properly.
Troubleshooting Other Subtitle Issues
Subtitles aren’t showing up on my video. Check your subtitles settings to make sure they’re set up correctly. Phone: Hit the “Settings” icon and hit “On” in the “Subtitles & Captions” section. Confirm your settings by hitting “X.” Web browser: Hit the “Settings” icon. Then, head to the “Subtitles & Audio” section, make sure they’re set to the correct language, and hit “On.” Living Room: Pull up the playback bar, access your “Settings” page, and check that “Captions & Subtitles” are set to “On.”
The subtitles aren’t accurate. Contact Hulu’s customer service team to report any inaccurate subtitles you’ve encountered, or shoot an email to [email protected] with information on the TV episode or movie that had the poor subtitles. Keep in mind that Hulu content produced before 2014 might have less-than-accurate subtitles, according to Hulu’s support page.
The subtitles are loading in a different language. Open your subtitles settings and make sure that you have the right language toggled on. Phone: Hit the “Settings” icon, and then tap your desired language in the “Subtitle Language” category. Tap “X” to confirm your selection. Web browser: Hit the “Settings” icon and head to the “Subtitles & Audio” menu. Then, choose your desired language. Living Room: Pull up the “Settings” menu and head to the “Subtitles” or “Subtitle Language” section. From there, select your desired subtitle language.
I can’t adjust my subtitle settings. Shut down your browser or Hulu app completely and then restart it to see if the problem resolves itself. Alternatively, you can: Double-check your accessibility settings to make sure everything looks good See if other Hulu movies and TV shows allow you to adjust your subtitles; if so, report the affected title to Hulu’s customer support team
I’m unable to switch my subtitle language. Try switching off your subtitles and then switching them back on again. It may also help to completely close down Hulu and then reboot it again. Check other movies and TV shows on Hulu and see if they have the same subtitle issues. If only one program seems to be the problem, reach out to Hulu’s customer support team and let them know.
Why are my Hulu subtitles out of sync?
There’s a problem with your device. If you have an older phone, tablet, or other device, you might run into issues with Hulu, like your subtitles not working properly.
There’s a problem with your internet connection. Hulu works best on devices that have at least 3.0 Mbps download speed. If your internet connection is on the slower side, it could prevent your Hulu streams (including your subtitles) from operating correctly.
There’s a problem on Hulu’s end. Hulu might be experiencing issues within their app or interface that prevent your subtitles from working properly.
