Do a fun hobby together.
Bond over a shared hobby that’s fun for both of you. This is a great way to ensure that you can spend some quality time with your partner throughout the day. It can be fun to hear about each other’s experiences with whatever hobby you choose, or you could even turn it into a bit of a competition! Some ideas include: Having a cooking competition Starting a virtual book club Having a painting contest Writing a story together Making a craft for each other Keeping a shared journal
Work on a project.
Collaborating on a project creates a sense of togetherness. It can be helpful to have a second opinion sometimes, so get your partner involved on whatever project you have lined up. Whether it’s a project that’s more serious, like for work or school, or just something you’re doing for fun, you can always recruit your partner for help. Some projects might include: Creating a Pinterest board together for ideas to decorate your room or house Planning a birthday party or other big event Making a bucket list together Designing a poster or flier together
Schedule a date night.
Carve out a regular and specific times to go on dates. Making an effort to spend quality time with one another is extremely important in any long distance relationship. Set aside a specific time each week or month to go on a date and get your fill of being together, just the two of you. Your idea of a date could really be anything, but here are some suggestions: Have a dinner date. Watch a movie together. Have a spa day. Sing karaoke together. Watch an online concert together.
Learn a completely new skill together.
Doing something new as a couple helps you feel connected. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Even though your partner won’t be physically by your side, you both can bond over your shared experiences, and you’ll be left with a special memory just between the two of you. Pick a random recipe and attempt to cook it. Read a book from a genre that you’ve never tried before. Watch a movie that neither of you have seen before. Sign up to take a class for something random. Learn a foreign language together.
Tell them all about a new place you went to.
Go to places you’ve never been and swap stories with your partner. Even though you can’t go there together, it’s still special and wonderful just to be able to talk to someone about the amazing adventure you’ve been on. Eat at a new restaurant and give a full review of the food. Go to that new cafe you’ve been dying to visit and give them your honest review of the vibes and food. Visit the new store in the mall and gossip about the people you saw there.
Play a game.
Games are a great way to unwind and bond. Thanks to the internet, there are plenty of virtual games you can play together, or you can stick to a classic board game or card game. You can also invite other friends and family members to join and make it really feel like a party! Some ideas for games include: A virtual escape room Trivia Video games 20 Questions Drinking games Taking online personality quizzes and discussing the results
Spice things up.
Taking time to get intimate helps you feel closer to each other. Just because you’re not physically within reach of one another doesn’t mean you have to neglect your needs when it comes to intimacy. Though it may be lacking actual physical touch, you can still use things like text or video calls to achieve that sense of satisfaction that you may be craving. Have a bath time video call. Send some saucy and flirty texts. Play drinking games or something like strip poker over video call.
Go on a walk.
Hop on a video call and explore new places together. Spend some quality time together in nature and change up the scenery a bit. Even if it’s just taking a short walk around the block, you get the opportunity to show your partner your little slice of Earth, and they can show you theirs. Some other ideas might be: Take each other on a tour of your favorite places in your neighborhood. Exercise together outside. Go on a hike together. Have a picnic. Go on a scavenger hunt around your separate areas.
Send a meme that’ll make them laugh.
Text them little things throughout the day you think they’ll like. Let them know you’re thinking about them by sending them photos, videos, or other things you know they’ll enjoy. You don’t have to be texting them every second of every day. Just something every now and then with a “Thought of you when I saw this” attached to it will let them see how thoughtful you are. Some examples include: Send them a song recommendation. Take pictures of things that remind you of them. Send them videos you think they’ll find interesting. Link them to an article you know they’ll enjoy reading.
Let them know how your day is going.
Keep them involved in your life by sharing the little things. Even if it seems mundane, make them feel like they’re really right there beside you throughout the day by giving them little updates. Take time to catch up at the end of the day over the phone or just send them texts throughout the day. Ask their opinion on things to make them feel included in your life. Tell them about something funny that happened at work or school. Ask for their opinion about what outfit you should wear. Tell them your plans for the day from the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep. Have them pick out what you’re going to eat for dinner.
Text each other “good morning” and “good night.”
Send each other short and sweet messages throughout the day. A simple “good morning” from your partner might be just what you need to get going in the morning. Motivate each other throughout the day with encouraging and sweet messages. Send an inspirational quote you think they’d enjoy reading. Tell them to have a good day at work and welcome them back when their day is over. Remind them to eat well and drink lots of water.
Send them a care package.
Send them a gift to let them know you’re thinking of them. It doesn’t have to just be for something like a birthday or anniversary. Even if it’s just something small or silly, let them know you’re thinking of them with a gift. Some ideas are: Send them a package with their favorite snacks. Gift them with a virtual gift card to their favorite store or restaurant. Do some online shopping and have the items shipped to them.
Mail a letter through the post.
Take a break from technology to change things up. As wonderful as technology can be, it can be draining after using it day in and day out to talk with your partner. Shake things up a bit and use the regular post to send each other handwritten letters or other gifts. It may not be as fast as just texting one another, but there’s certainly a unique kind of excitement that comes with waiting for a letter to arrive in your mailbox!
Have deep talks.
Share your honest thoughts and feelings with one another. Not everything has to be just about fun when you’re in a long distance relationship, or any relationship for that matter. Taking time to sit down and talk through your feelings and thoughts is also really important in a relationship. Ask each other more complicated questions that don’t necessarily have an answer and really try and listen to what the other person has to say. “What’s your dream in life?” “What makes you smile?” “What’s one of your biggest regrets?” “What do you value most in other people?” “Do you believe that everything happens for a reason?” “If you could say something to your younger self, what would it be and why?” “What would someone have to do to break your trust?”
Plan an in-person date.
Make plans to see each other in real life when the time is right. Actively make plans for you and your partner to meet face to face. While it may not be within the near future, it should definitely be a goal of yours. You can go to them, they can come to you, or you can meet somewhere in the middle and make a vacation out of it. Reserve a day to visit the zoo, aquarium, or a museum. Take a few days to escape somewhere tropical and vacation together. Try out some sports together, such as bowling, rock-climbing, horseback riding, or skiing. Spend the night cuddling on the couch while binging a TV show.
