Porto Alegre: Australia coach Ange Postecoglou says it would be pointless trying to contain the Netherlands and hit back on the counter in their World Cup Group B match on Wednesday.

He says, "If we just try and defend for 90 minutes there will be only one result - and it won't be in our favour."

Postecoglou spoke on Tuesday ahead of Australia's last training session before they meet the Netherlands, who stunned reigning champion Spain 5-1 in their opening match.

Australia are coming off a 3-1 loss to Chile, but Postecolglou says it's unlikely the Socceroos will be overawed by the Dutch.

He says, "We keep saying we want to measure ourselves against the best, and we are getting an opportunity to do that."
