France defender William Saliba offered an update on star Kylian Mbappe’s condition ahead of their UEFA Euro 2024 fixture against the Netherlands on Saturday.
Mbappe injured his nose during France’s opener at the continental contest against Austria a couple of nights ago, as the Didier Deschamps’ men went on to win 1-0.
Saliba said, “I saw him this morning, he was a bit better.”
“I think he was off to do more tests. I don’t know anything more.” the 23-year-old defender added through a translator.
“But when I saw him this morning he was a bit better,” the stopper back revealed during the news conference in Paderborn.
Mbappe was forced to be substituted during France’s opener after he came into contact, nose first with Austrian defender Kevin Danso’s shoulder while contesting a header.
It was reported after the game that the star forward had suffered a broken nose and would be required to play in the continental showpiece wearing a mask.
Mbappe was able to see the funny side of things as he took to his social media platform to give an update on his condition as he asked for suggestions for a mask.
France managed to claim all points on offer as they edged out Austria thanks to an own goal from defender Maximilian Wober in the 38th minute of the game. Mbappe played a crucial part in the lone strike of the game as it was his cross that picked up a deflection off the defender before rolling into the net.
The victory marked Deschamps’ 100th win as the French national team coach and got them off to a positive start in the tournament as they go chasing the title for a record-levelling third time, and first since their triumph in the European Championships in the year 2000.
France are pooled in Group D alongside The Netherlands, Austria and Poland, and will take on Poland on the 25th of June to close out their group stage assignments.
