Madrid: Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo put his team ahead against Villarreal on Sunday evening with a trademark free-kick before commemorating the recent loss of life in Madeira with a message on his t-shirt.

The former Manchester United winger was born in Funchal, which has recently been hit by massive mudslides and flooding, claiming more than 40 lives so far.

Following his netting from a direct free-kick at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday night, Ronaldo pulled up his Madrid jersey to reveal a t-shirt on which was simply written 'MADEIRA'.

Hundreds have been left homeless in the wake of the Madeira disaster, which was brought on by recent stormy weather on the south side of the Portuguese island.

Ronaldo previously pledged to support his home city of Funchal and the island as a whole by offering to help with relief efforts.

His message at the Bernabeu came on an emotional evening that also saw legendary forward Luis Molowny remembered with a minute's silence.
