Cristiano Ronaldo's contract impasse with Spanish champions Real Madrid continues with no end in sight.

Manchester: Manchester United are on red alert as Cristiano Ronaldo's contract impasse with Spanish champions Real Madrid continues with no end in sight, and the Old Trafford club is working on a stunning 55 million pounds plus Nani and David De Gea swap deal for Ronaldo.

The Ronaldo camp is looking at commercial ventures which would tie in with a Premier League return this summer. The big hurdle would be whether the Premier League leaders could offer a salary to rival the player's current 220,000-pound-a-week deal and stay within the new UEFA Financial Fair Play regulations, which come into force next season.

But there is a way round those rules which would see a player agree a salary with a side and then sign a separate endorsement package with the club's sponsors. And it is exactly that model which is being considered at Old Trafford, with new club sponsors Chevrolet ready to make Ronaldo their global ambassador to help bring him back to Manchester.

Earlier, Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson left the door open to a return when asked about Ronaldo in December, saying, "You never know. He may want to go to another club at some point, and I'd hope he would want to come here."

Can Manchester United pull this off?

What's your reaction?
