Meghalaya CM Announces Partnership With NorthEast United FC to Establish Residential Football Academy in Shillong

The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, announced a partnership with ISL side NorthEast United FC to establish a residential football academy in the state’s capital city of Shillong.

Co-owner of NEUFC and Bollywood star John Abraham was present at the announcement event to strengthen the football ecosystem in the state and region.

Sangma shared a picture from the event with a caption that read, “Happy to announce Government of Meghalaya’s partnership with @TheJohnAbraham and @NEUtdFC for establishing a football residency academy in #Shillong.”

Abraham, who is known for his fitness and physique, has been a vocal supporter and admirer of the beautiful game which resulted in his ownership of the side from the North Eastern part of India.

The region has been traditionally associated with fervent support and regard for the game of football and has produced several high-profile stars over the years.

The highlands, as they are fondly known, are yet to hoist the ISL trophy despite being part of the tournament ever since the inaugural edition, but have produced enthralling displays of football over the years.

The event also witnessed the celebration of the successful completion of the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project, which was aimed at creating an ecosystem to nurture musicians, singers, composers and writers to build a thriving music industry.

The Government initiative is set to be further upscaled by providing support to artists and individuals to establish studios.

NEUFC stand eighth in the twelve-team ISL, with 20 points under their belt, following their resurrection under coach Khalid Jamil, who was appointed this season and has proved that his appointment with the aim of taking the team forward was the right decision by the management.
