Premier League side Manchester United is undergoing major changes that could result in a significant number of staff layoffs. The Red Devils have undergone changes since the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe as a major stakeholder at the club. The ongoing transformation spearheaded by the British billionaire’s football operations team has lowered the morale of the staff members ahead of the club’s US tour.

The helping hands have reportedly been told their jobs are at risk. As per reports, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team have planned around 250 job cuts at Old Trafford. The staff members whose jobs are at risk have reportedly been informed in individual meetings that the layoffs will likely accelerate in the coming weeks with confirmed redundancies.

Manchester United were scheduled to leave for the preseason on Wednesday (July 24); however, some who were originally set to go on the tour were withdrawn late on to cut costs. The touring crew to the United States comprises around 125 members, including the players and coaching staff. It included the total personnel on the club’s summer tour last year, which was also held in America.

This situation resulted in the mood around the club being bleak. Many of these staff members are said to be angry and hurt at the brutal manner of their treatment.

Most staff have pointed fingers at the club’s history of signing excessively expensive players, which has resulted in a waste of money. They feel the poor recruitment is to be held responsible instead of the individuals who are carrying out their roles diligently at the club.

It was announced last month that the club had decided to slash nearly a quarter of its 1,112-member workforce to control operation costs. Reports have also suggested that these job cuts will help restructure the club by saving around £10 million going forward.

Speaking of Manchester United’s signings in the last decade, the club has spent around £1.1 billion on players. For comparison, the current UEFA Champions League winners, Real Madrid, have only spent £200 million.

Despite spending less than a quarter of Manchester United’s transfer bill, the Los Blancos have won the Champions League six times within the last 10 years, while the Red Devils have won none.

Just this season, Manchester United have already made two big signings, including Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro. They signed the Bologna striker in a deal worth £36.5 million, whereas 18-year-old Yoro cost them around £52 million. They now look to make Matthijs de Ligt their third signing while also looking out for a midfield addition.
