New Delhi: The title race is getting hotter by each week and Mohun Bagan’s star striker Jose Ramirez Barreto gave his thoughts on the three-way battle at the top.
Mohun Bagan had a glorious 10 match unbeaten streak before going down disappointingly to East Bengal. As a result, they lost their top spot after two weeks and now find themselves in the third position.
With six matches to go, Barreto states that his side still has everything to play for and there is no reason for the fans to be dejected following the 3-0 loss to arch rivals East Bengal.
"It’s a three way battle at the top between Sporting, Churchill and us. There are six games to be played and anything can happen.
"Churchill have won their game against JCT and are now second but let’s not forget that they have played one more than Sporting and us," pointed Barreto.
Following the thrashing at the hands of the Red and Gold’s, Mohun Bagan have put through the scanner which Barreto feels would just fade away after a few days.
"I have been in Kolkata or long and for me, this is normal. The media in Kolkata loves to jump the gun and they play their games. For the first two or three days, the fire is high and then it goes away.
"It’s important on our part that we don’t lose our focus and continue to work on ourselves," said the in-form player.
Meanwhile, Barreto shall meet Minister of Parliament Amitava Nandy later in the day to look for a land as he plans to start the phase two of Brasil Futebol Academia in West Bengal.
For those unaware, it was in January that Barreto, alongwith Beto, started an Academy in Goa in their bid to improve Indian football from the grassroots level.
"I am meeting an MP after the practice session. We shall go together and see a land for the Academy which we plan to start in Bengal as well," added the Brazilian.
