Liverpool: Wolverhampton Wolves drew 1-1 at Everton in the Premier League on Saturday after Sylvan Ebanks-Blake's late equalizer negated Tim Cahill's first-half goal.
Wolves forward Kevin Doyle crossed for Ebanks-Blake to tap home in the 75th minute in the visitors' first shot on target. Doyle's cross came after teammate Adlene Guedioura had won the ball in a contentious challenge with Everton defender John Heitinga.
"We were hopeless in the first half and that is my responsibility because I was trying to stop them playing and fiddling around with the team — none of which worked," Wolves manager Mick McCarthy said.
"They should have been out of sight at halftime. They could have been 5-0 up but at the end of the second half, I'm not too sure I wanted it to end — I fancied us winning.
"I thought we deserved our equalizer."
Cahill put Everton in front in the 43rd minute, smashing in the rebound from a free kick by Mikel Arteta at Goodison Park.
There was also an element of controversy surrounding the goal, with TV replays showing Everton should have received a penalty instead of a free kick as Arteta had been fouled by Stephen Ward in the box but Cahill's powerful finish rendered Lee Mason's contentious decision moot.
Wolves goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann made an acrobatic save from Heitinga's 25-yard drive in the 25th.
Everton missed numerous chances through the match, most notably by Cahill, Jermaine Beckford, Diniyar Bilyaletdinov and substitute Louis Saha, whose late introduction almost gave David Moyes' team all three points.
Everton lost 1-0 at Blackburn and Wolves beat Stoke 2-1 in last week's opening round.
Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard had little to do before Ebanks-Blake struck, easily catching a long-range free kick by Matt Jarvis in one of the few chances for the visitors in the first half.
"I thought we played fine in the first half and you probably thought the victory was only going to go one way but that's what the Premier League does to you," Moyes told the Press Association. "You've got to take your chances when you get them."
