It has not been a smooth start to their Premier League campaign for Chelsea this season. Having played 20 matches so far in the league, the Blues now occupy the 10th spot in the standings. In a situation like this, Chelsea team management is expected to remain busy during the January transfer window.
It is being learnt that Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino is currently willing to bolster his attacking unit. A report published by The Sun claims that Ukrainian striker Artem Dovbyk has been on Chelsea’s radar. The 21-year-old, who is currently playing for La Liga outfit Girona, is reportedly being closely monitored by Chelsea. His contract will come to an end in 2028 and could be sold for a reported amount of around £39 million.
The Sun report stated that Pochettino has even sent scouts to observe Artem Dovbyk in the last few weeks. The article mentions that the Argentine manager has been quite “impressed” by Dovbyk’s progress. The Sun claims that Pochettino now wants Dovbyk to vie for the number 9 spot with Nicolas Jackson in the Chelsea squad.
Jackson has been Chelsea’s first-choice attacking option this season. The 22-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge having signed an eight-year deal in the summer. Chelsea reportedly paid Spanish outfit Villarreal a little more than his £30.1 million release clause in exchange for more payment terms. Jackson is now set to miss some key fixtures for Chelsea due to his involvement with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations. Needless to say, Jackson’s absence has forced Chelsea to look for new faces in the attacking unit.
The Sun report stated that Artem Dovbyk has the same agent as Chelsea midfielder Mykhailo Mudryk. The duo are also, reportedly, very close friends. Dovbyk has been in stunning form in the La Liga so far this season. He has registered 11 goals and four assists in the Spanish domestic league till now this season. The 2023-24 season has also proved to be quite a fruitful one for Girona. The Michel-coached side currently find themselves in the second spot of the La Liga standings.
Having played 18 matches so far in the La Liga, Girona now occupy the second position in the competition. They have till now collected 45 points in the tournament.
