Chelsea have been one of the busiest English clubs in this summer transfer window. In their latest move, the London-based side secured the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Pedro Neto.
The Portugal international is set to shift his base to Stamford Bridge on a deal worth almost £54 million. He will complete his medical at the new club before finalising the contract. Chelsea had kept their eyes on Neto since the start of this summer. They earlier submitted two bids for the 24-year-old but both were turned down by the Wolves.
Chelsea initially offered a player-plus-cash deal for Pedro Neto with the intention of releasing two players – David Datro Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah. After the Wolves rejected the bid, the Blues returned with a straight cash offer, which also failed to convince the fellow Premier League side.
Chelsea finally made it happen on a staggering deal that included a fixed sum of £51.3 million plus £2.6 million in add-ons. If Pedro Neto parts ways with Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer, he will become the club’s record sale in history. The Wolves sold Ruben Neves to Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal in a deal worth £47 million last summer.
Pedro Neto joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2019 from Lazio. The young winger has featured in 135 matches for the Premier League club across all competitions and has recorded 14 goals.
Chelsea have already spent nearly £200 million in the transfer market this summer. They have roped in midfielders Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Renato Veiga and Omari Kellyman, while also signing defenders like Tosin Adarabioyo, Aaron Anselmino and Caleb Wiley.
The club has also bolstered their attack by including winger Estevao Willian and striker Marc Guiu in the squad. Atletico Madrid forward Samu Omorodion has also come under their radar and may secure a £34.5-million deal, as per the BBC. Moreover, Chelsea have landed Danish goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen and may sign 19-year-old Mike Penders from Belgian Pro League club KRC Genk for £17 million.
If all these signings get completed, it will take the number of players in Chelsea’s senior squad to almost 50. The English clubs are allowed to submit a squad list of 25 players for the Premier League. There is no restriction on using footballers under the age of 21.
