New Delhi: English Premier League leader Manchester United won the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash against Italian club AS Roma at the Olympic Stadium in Rome on Tuesday night.

A brilliant header by Cristiano Ronaldo put United ahead in the 39th minute. Ronaldo ran into the box and jumped high to meet Paul Scholes' cross and put his team ahead with a powerful header.

The goal was Ronaldo's seventh and he is the top scorer of the League this season takes.

Late in the second half Wayne Rooney's strike confirmed United's place in the semi-final as United completed a 2-0 win.

With two away goals, next Wednesday's second leg game at Old Trafford becomes a mere formality for the two-time champions.

But an injury to United's Serbia defender Nemanja Vidic will give Sir Alex Ferguson some sleepless nights.

And Spanish giants Barcelona, who are likely to face United in the semi-final, got their win at Gelshenkirschen against FC Schalke 04.

The only goal of the match came in as early as the 12th minute courtesy the 17-year-old Spanish striker Bojan Krkic.

The score line remained the same for the next 78 minutes but Bojan created some sort of history by becoming the first player born in the 1990's to score a Champions League goal.

The return leg will be played on next Wednesday at Camp Nou.
