New Delhi: Manchester United shrugged of their sluggish form as they beat Middlesbrough in the third round of the Carling Cup.
It was Cristiano Ronaldo who opened the score at Old Trafford. The 25th minute saw him convert a Ryan Giggs corner with a trademark header.
Ten minutes into the second half and Middlesbrough equalised through Adam Johnson.
Manchester United regained the lead as Chris Riggot set up Ryan Giggs for this one and it was 2-1 to Manchester United.
Nani completed the 3-1 win in injury time as United marched into the fourth round.
However, there was some bad news as Manchester United midfielder Rodrigo Possebon escaped without a broken leg from a tackle that led to a red card for defender and Middlesbrough skipper Emanuel Pogatetz.
The 19-year-old Brazilian midfielder, who was making his debut for United, was taken to a hospital after lengthy treatment on the field on Tuesday with blood flowing from the wound. Pogatetz, an Austria international, was immediately shown the red card after lunging into the tackle.
United initially feared the lower leg had been fractured but the club issued a statement on Wednesday saying there was no break. He was kept in the hospital overnight for observation and to assess whether there was any ligament damage to his knee.
