The Telangana government has announced the closure of schools and colleges in Mulugu district in light of the Medaram Jathara, a renowned trade fair in South India. District Collector Tripathi has issued an order declaring a four-day holiday, from February 21 to February 24, 2024, for both government and private educational institutions in Mulugu district. The closure aligns with the dates of the Medaram Jathara event.
Following this closure, regular classes will resume from February 26, 2024. Often referred to as the Telangana Kumbh Mela, the Medaram Sammakka Saralamma Jatara is celebrated as the largest tribal fair in Asia.
The Medaram Jathara festival occurs biennially in Medaram Village of Tadvai Mandal, nestled deep in the heart of the thick forests of Mulugu district. Designated as a State Festival in 1998, this year’s Jathara is scheduled to take place from February 21 to February 24, 2024.
To assist devotees heading to Medaram for the biannual festivities, the Union Minister for Tourism and Culture has scheduled extra trains on February 21 and 24. In addition, the tourism department has started offering pilgrims attending the Medaram Maha Jatara festival helicopter services. These helicopter services, which are run by Bengaluru-based Thumbi Aviation, began operation on February 17, reported Times Now.
The Telangana government proclaimed February 8 a holiday earlier this month in honour of the Muslims’ Shab-e-Meraj festival. On this day, the state ordered all schools to stay closed. Shab-e-Meraj on February 8 has been designated as a holiday in the government-released school holiday calendar. Muslims regard Shab-e-Meraj to be an auspicious day. Mosques are lit up with lamps on that particular day.
