Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag’s elder son Aaryavir Sehwag made his U-19 debut for Delhi on Friday (October 4) in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy match against Manipur, which was played at SLIMS Cricket Ground in Pondicherry. The 16-year-old came out to bat as an opener and scored 49 runs from 64 balls. During his stay at the crease, he hammered six fours and one six for the Pranav Pant-led side and helped them win the match by six wickets.
Aaryavir was unlucky to miss out on a deserving half century by a single run. He was dismissed by Danish on the fourth ball of the 21st over, but before returning back to the pavilion, he added 33 runs for the first wicket with Sarthak Ray (25) and 61 runs for the third wicket with Pranav.
Apart from Aaryavir, captain Pant scored 75 runs. He faced a total of 45 balls during his stay at the crease and remained unbeaten.
Delhi chased down the target of 169 runs in 26 overs for the loss of four wickets.
Aaryavir had come up with solid batting earlier during a trial match for DDCA, registering a fine inning of 183 off 136 balls. In 2022, he was named in the Delhi under-16 team probable players’ list for the Vijay Merchant Trophy.
Earlier batting first, Manipur posted a total of 169 runs in 49.1 overs. Alikarim was the highest scorer for his side, having breached the 50-run knock. He returned to the dressing room after scoring 56 runs from 119 balls. He was ably supported by Md. Aqeel Ahamed, who scored 49 runs that helped Manipur reach a respectable total.
For Delhi, Laxman finished the match with figures of 3 for 24 in 9.1 overs, while Divansh Rawat and Aman Chaudhary dismissed two Manipur batters each.
Delhi is part of Group D in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy and currently sits at the No. 1 position in the points table. They have four points and a net run rate of +3.217. In the second match, Delhi will face Haryana at CAP Ground 3 in Puducherry on Sunday (October 6). Haryana hammered Uttar Pradesh by four wickets in their first match.
